Description
Renowned individually for their intimate and emotive solo performances, as well as with their bands Manran and MacCollective, this is the first duo album from Calum Stewart (wooden flute ) and Lauren MacColl (fiddle and viola)-two young musicians at the top of their game.
Calum and Lauren are steeped in the traditions of the easterly coast of the north of Scotland , their native Moray and Black Isle areas. Their shared influences encompass Gaelic vocal music, traditional music from home and Ireland, Cape Breton and Brittany, and music from their talented contemporaries.
On this recording, Lauren uses various tunings on fiddle and viola to create different resonances with Calum's wooden flute playing. The material is sourced from old manuscripts and their own writing. It is a raw sound at times reminiscent of far older traditional recordings, intimate and immediate. They are joined on a few tracks by Andy May (Baltic Crossing) on harmonium ,and Eamon Doorley (Danu, Julie Fowlis ) on bouzouki.
The duo first joined forces on Calum's album Earlywood and have been developing a sound as a duo ever since.
Lauren is regarded as one of the finest fiddlers of her generation, a previous , and youngest winner of "instrumentalist of the year"(Scottish Traditional Music Awards ) and BBC Young Folk Award. She has been leading her band The MacCollective since winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2004.
Her solo album was named "Classic Album " at Celtic Connections.
Calum is at the forefront of Scottish flute playing, displaying exemplary technique and emotion in his playing, and is now based in the thriving flute scene of Brittany. He is a founder member of the Gaelic band Manran, and his explorations of world music have seen him collaborate with the likes of Nitan Sawhney and Heikki Bourgault.
