Description
Tapping into the very soul of traditional music, touring companions of 18 years Chris Sherburn & Denny Bartley return to their original groundbreaking duo format with "Lucy Wan".
Denny's distinctive, personalised style of vocals and powerful open-tuned rhythm guitar, combined with Chris' unparalleled and extraordinary anglo concertina playing, make it impossible not to be swept away with lilting and lifting tunes sometimes played with soul-aching beauty, other times with the ability to set your feet and heart dancing.
Irishman Denny Bartley (guitar and vocals) was born in a remote village close enough to Limerick to feel drawn to the natural inheritance of age-old slides, slow airs, slip jigs and wild reels. Chris Sherburn grew up surrounded by folk music of all kinds; his parent's involvement with the Goole Folk Club meant that his home was a regular haunt for passing folk singers and musicians from all over the Britain.
The two met on the Hull session scene in the early '90's, where they formed an instant bond, both musically and as friends, and developed a unique and recognisable musical style, releasing their debut duo album Last Night's Fun in 1995. The dynamic duo built on this album name and 'Last Night's Fun' the band was born.
Forerunners on the folk circuit until 2008, 'Last Night's Fun' periodically featured in their line-up Jane Sherburn (bodhran), Nick Scott (pipes) and Ciaran Boyle (bodhran). During this time they released four more albums, including the critically acclaimed Tempered (brilliant - 4* Mojo magazine, "extraordinarily seductive?absolutely faultless? a sound that I have not heard anywhere else in the world..five gold stars yet again" ? Shreds and Patches). Known for their powerful tunes, blisteringly soulful songs and side splitting humour, they won unconditional love from audiences around the world with their stripped back, brutally heartfelt delivery of traditional Irish and Irish influenced material.
'Lucy Wan' is a raw and stirring collection of spine tingling songs and driving tunes. Denny lends his emotive voice to classics The Auld Triangle (Behan) and Rainy Night in Soho (MacGowan) and the pair present distinctive interpretations of traditional songs The Bantry Girls Lament, Connie's Song, and Sheep Stealers. Chris and Denny have earned their reputation as masters of the tradition and know exactly what they're doing; every song and every tune is an all encompassing adventure, awaking the imagination with a unique passion only they can convey.
