Description

Lovingly mastered from old tapes found in a friend's attic, this is a vintage
collection of previously unreleased rarities and early works by one of the guitar's truly great innovators.

A remarkable guitarist dedicated to innovation and technical mastery who blended elements of English and Celtic folk, jazz, country blues, pre-Renaissance and Western/Eastern classical traditions, John Renbourn achieved world-wide acclaim with the band Pentangle. He was an inspirational musician who has influenced so many of today's great guitarists.

The Attic Tapes represents in John's own words, "what was happening to me at the time and a reflection of the general scene". These recordings were made in the two or three years before his first ever official release for Transatlantic Records, released in February 1966.

Lovingly mastered from a series of long lost tapes dating back to the early 1960s, the album not only features collaborations with Davy Graham and Beverley Martyn, it also includes a long lost version of Davy's classic "Anji" recorded in 1962. It includes sleeve notes by John, written shortly before his death in March 2015.

Press Quotes

"(5 stars) This brilliant loft-bound treasure salvage from the late, great John Renbourn finds the master folk guitarist in his early 60s pomp."

Record Collector, (Max Bell), October 2015

"(4 stars) It's a warm (and well-recorded) evocation of an era when bohemian cellars rang with Candyman and Cocaine and nascent guitar heroes such as Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Davey Graham (both featured) competed for songs and tunings...its 20 tracks make a rich tribute to Renbourn's dazzlingly intricate style (try Rosslyn) and wry character."

The Observer, (Neil Spencer), October 11, 2015

"It's an outstanding collection all round, and yes, an essential purchase."

fRoots, (David Kidman), October 2015

"Unheard early works from the late guitar master...it's striking to note that his playing - agile, descriptive, wonderfully explorative - sounds fully intact from the off."

Uncut, (Rob Hughes), November 2015

"These remastered recordings of one of the grand masters of folk guitar offer a fascinating insight into time, place and attitude...in the light of Renbourn's recent passing, it's desperately poignant, yet still oddly uplifting."

MOJO, (Colin Irwin), November 2015
