Description

Folk singer/songwriter Katy Carr's beautiful, romantic fourth album, 'Paszport', is an epic, poetic journey through her past and that of her mother's nation, Poland. It's a tight indie-folk record that explores themes of love, refugee status, loss of passport, country, resistance, hope against adversity and patriotism.

Dedicated to the Polish World War Two experience, the album was inspired by Kazik Piechowski who escaped from Aushwitz in the camp commandant's car in 1942 dressed in an SS uniform. It tackles areas and issues in Poland's history that have been long considered too politically sensitive for open discussion.

Drawing on all her influences and performances in the British vintage scene Carr has recruited musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds. They include Klezmer cellist Francesca Ter-Berg, classical and gypsy violinist Flora Curzon; and Klezmer, Egyptian and Eastern European percussionist Guy Schalom.

In 2012 Katy Carr was nominated for the London Music Award, alongside Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and the Arctic Monkeys, and also for The National Lottery Awards for her Arts Council-funded 'Escapologist Tour'. The video for the single from the album, "Kommander's Car", has already generated over 31,000 hits on Youtube.

Press Quotes

(4 stars) One of the most unusual, passionate and intriguing concept albums of the year...Carr's emotional songs are backed by bravely original arrangements...and deserve to be heard far beyond the Polish community.

The Guardian, (Robin Denselow), November 9, 2012

Not only are these songs with real stories and strong images, they've also got great tunes and inspiring arrangements...she's such a fabulous singer with a clear, expressive but unaffected voice.

fRoots (Ian Anderson), Nov/Dec 2012

(4 stars) Its elegant cello-led arrangements embrace klezmer, gypsy jazz, classicism and folk song while Carr's vocals shift between 1940s diva on Weronika, Kate Bush pyrotechnics on Travelling to You and folk song on Wojtek. Tender and brave in equal measure, Paszport proves a rich, rewarding creation.

The Observer, (Neil Spencer), November 11, 2012

(4 stars) Using klezmer cello, gypsy violin, ukulele and piano, Carr weaves a song-cycle by turns playful and sombre. Her imaginative settings reflect a singular talent.

The Times, (John Bungey), November 24, 2012

Ambitious, quirky and rich in folk melodies, the vignettes give us a glimpse into the psyche of a country...Carr's pure unaffected voice rises to the challenge, and the arrangements are never less than immaculate.

The Sunday Times, (Clive Davis), November 18, 2012

Angular, theatrical, Klezmeric. Intriguing.

The Independent On Sunday, (Nick Coleman), November 11, 2012
