Description
Mid-price reissue of saxophonist/composer Martin Speake's 2007 duo album with drummer and percussionist Mark Sanders.
After twelve CDs on independent labels, including his 2006 album 'Change of Heart' on ECM Records, Martin Speake decided to start his own label, Pumpkin Records, to release some projects that are close to his heart, with 'Spark' being his debut release.
'Spark', is a totally improvised duo with Mark Sanders, but Martin still remains true to his melodic concept and Mark's playing ranges from groove based to complete abstraction. He creates unique sounds from his instruments, with a dynamic range from a whisper to a roar.
Personnel: Martin Speake (alto saxophone), Mark Sanders (drums & percussion).
Press Quotes
Spark may be defined by spontaneity and exploration, but it's also remarkably accessible.
All About Jazz, (John Kelman), January 2007
An interesting diversion for Speake...the extent to which he avoids repetition confirms how steadily he continues to evolve...Drummer Mark Sanders is a gifted player capable of seamless movement between free-rhythms and propulsive swing.
The Guardian, (John Fordham), January 19, 2007
