Description

The first official release, mastered from the original tapes, of the radio broadcast of this 1960 Jazz At The Philharmonic concert in Zurich features the complete set performed by the Miles Davis Quintet that included John Coltrane on tenor sax.

In 1960, jazz impresario Norman Granz took the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Miles Davis Quintet and the Stan Getz Quartet on a "Jazz At The Philharmonic" tour through Europe. The only Swiss concert of the tour took place on Friday April 8th 1960 in the Kongresshaus Zurich and was recorded by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. Released officially for the first time and mastered from the original tapes, this new CD presents the complete set performed by the Miles Davis Quintet that evening.

The concert featured four long numbers, all closely associated with Davis' small groups since 1956. The standard "If I Were A Bell" opens the set, followed by three Davis originals: "Fran Dance", "So What" and "All Blues", the latter two of which appeared on the groundbreaking album, "Kind of Blue".

Following the end of the JATP tour, Coltrane left the quintet to follow his own ambitions, so ending his five-year tenure with the Davis quintet and a partnership between the two that helped develop the modal jazz form. This concert was therefore one of the last occasions the two played together on stage.

Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums).

Press Quotes

(5 stars) First official release for this excellent-quality recording of the Kind of Blue-era Davis Quintet...Davis and Coltrane play superbly, and Coltrane's solo on "So What" anticipates everything that followed. Amazing.

The Independent On Sunday, (Phil Johnson), August 12, 2012

(5 stars) Magnificent. Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb set the groove for an evening of frontline solos for the gods. Grab it.

Evening Standard, (Jack Massarik), August 17, 2012

(5 stars) Everyone is on splendid form...a very exciting session.

BBC Music Magazine, (Barry Witherden), December 2012

(4 stars) You can hear the drama of a turning point in jazz history on this rare, remarkably well-recorded set.

The Observer, (Dave Gelly), September 23, 2012

(4 stars) This was one of Davis's best groups...superb performance...this is Davis at his very best and his open sound is at its most beautiful. His ideas flow with both fire and discipline.

Jazz Journal, (Steve Voce), September 2012

It's good to hear to hear live versions of If I Were a Bell, Fran Dance, So What and All Blues, especially in such good sound.

Northern Echo, (Peter Bevan), September 13, 2012
