Description

Recorded in 1960 at a Jazz At The Philharmonic concert in Zurich, Switzerland presented by Norman Granz, this album features the legendary pianist Oscar Peterson with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen. It is released here officially for the first time and was mastered from the original tapes.

In 1960 jazz impresario Norman Granz took the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Miles Davis Quintet and the Stan Getz Quartet on a "Jazz At The Philharmonic" tour through Europe. The only Swiss concert of the tour took place on Friday April 8th 1960 in the Kongresshaus Zurich and was recorded by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. This new CD presents the complete set performed by the Oscar Peterson Trio that evening.

At the time of this concert Peterson was just 35 and just a few months into performing with his revised trio featuring bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen (1959 - 1965). It was this particular trio that delivered the acclaimed albums, 'Night Train' and 'Canadiana Suite'.

These live performances demonstrate Peterson's virtuoso playing on two upbeat numbers, "Politics and Poker", from the musical 'Fiorello', and Clifford Brown's crowd-pleasing bop tune "Dahoud". These are contrasted by two great, expansive, and beautifully arranged ballads, Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" and "The Maidens of Cadiz", the latter inspired by French composer Léo Delibes and featured famously on the Miles Davis/Gil Evans album, 'Miles Ahead'. Two medium-paced tunes complete the set, Duke Jordan's "Jordu" and Ray Bryant's Latin flavoured "Cubano Chant".

Personnel: Oscar Peterson (piano), Ray Brown (bass), Ed Thigpen (drums).

Press Quotes

(4 stars) Terrific set...the freewheeling Peterson was at the peak of his powers, and it's a thrill to hear him, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen in action.

Scotland On Sunday, (Alison Kerr), August 12, 2012

Captures them in top form and sound...includes a particularly fine version of The Maidens of Cadiz.

Northern Echo, (Peter Bevan), September 13, 2012
