Description

The third album by forward-thinking jazz group The Rongetz Foundation, led by French trumpeter/composer Stephane Ronget and recorded in New York. 'Brooklyn Butterfly Session' features an array of top class guest vocalists, including the hottest jazz star of 2012, Gregory Porter, Renee Neufville of Zhane and the Roy Hargrove Factor fame and John Robinson, who has worked with Flying Lotus and Carlos Niño, alongside baritone saxophonist Ronnie Cuber.

The goal of the session was to dig more than ever into compositions that are bridging the gap between jazz, hip hop and soul music. It resulted in eight original pieces and a cover of a song by Reggae pioneer Count Ossie. The first single from the album "Gogo Soul" was recently releases on 7" vinyl/download and was playlisted by Jazz FM and received support from Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music) and Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2).

Stephane Ronget's first group was the 'Nu jazz' band Metropolitan Jazz Affair, who between 2000 - 2007 released two albums, several 7 and 12 inch singles and featured on more than 40 compilations. Ronget wanted to move towards a more live sound and to create "on the fly" music, so he formed The Rongetz Foundation - a band to play his own compositions, whilst also mixing musicians from different backgrounds - jazz, soul and hip hop.

Personnel: Stephane Ronget (trumpet, compositions, arrangements, production), Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone), Bruce Williams (alto saxophone), Jeremy Brun (keys), Corcoran Holt (acoustic bass), Jerome Jennings (drums), Gregory Porter, Renee Neufville, John Robinson, Ansel Matthews, Marvin Parks (vocals)

Press Quotes

(5 stars) I love this album...it is a truly exciting sound coming from 12 supreme musicians with a very unique chemistry. More please...

Blues & Soul, (Simon Redley), December 2012 / January 2013

The production, arrangements and composition are of the highest order. Highly recommended.

Echoes (Album of the Month), (Malcolm Prangell), October 2012

Man of the moment Gregory Porter features on the opening two tracks, the brilliant 'Gogo Soul' and the swinging 6/4 'Hard Bop Merry Go Round', the latter featuring a killer bari sax solo from Ronnie Cuber.

Jazzwise, (Peter Quinn), December 2012 / January 2013
