The French multi-instrumentalist, DJ, composer and TV presenter David Walters teaming up with studio wizard Patchworks (aka Mr President, Voilà à Sound System, Da Break) for the infectious "Mama", complete with a killer jazz-funk/broken beat rework from Patchwork himself.
Ahead of his upcoming album in 2020 on Heavenly Sweetness, here's is the first taste, "Mama", a track in which the balafon's woody resonance takes centre stage, some meditative flute and the female choruses help David Creole roots to really shine through. His Caribbean grandfather was exiled to New York but true to the title of this track, Mama, a dedication to his grandmother, who is the real star here.
Walters thought, conceived and produced the track in close collaboration with Patchworks. In the wake of the original version, David and Patchworks took the track, locked themselves away in the studio to come away with a total reinterpretation and new personal take on the track.
For David's reworking, he toughens up the drums, increases the bass and nudges the track firmly into dancefloor territory, whilst staying true to his original vision of the track.
The Patchworks remix is a jazz-funk workout, echoes of Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith. Powerful drums, funky-ass bass and the Fender Rhodes that becomes a highlight. Motivated further by an irrepressible two-step groove that meshes so well with the hands of the balafon player.
