Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous & Roy Haynes
Description
When first released in 1982, 'Trio Music' was available on two LPs. For some years it has been available only as a two-CD set. ECM has now reissued the whole prize-winning double album on a single CD.
Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes played together for the first time back in 1967 in a New York studio. That session resulted in the LP 'Now he sings, now he sobs', a milestone in modern piano trio music of the post-Bill Evans period. Their second collaboration took place in Los Angeles in November 1981 - for ECM this time - when they recorded the double album 'Trio Music'. It contained both freely improvised music ("with little or no discussion before the playing" as Corea put it) and compositions by jazz giant Thelonious Monk, which Corea considers to be "some of the classic music of the 20th century...the Monk songs were just pure fun".
Personnel: Chick Corea (piano), Miroslav Vitous (bass), Roy Haynes (drums)
Praise for Trio Music from American critics:
"All four sides of this reunion of an historic session dance with wild abandon...The ESP between the three is electrifying...wonderfully cohesive." - Downbeat
"Superb...I strongly recommend the album to anyone with an ear for unadulterated, imaginative and thoroughly tasteful music." - Stereo Review
"One of the most effective interpretations of Monk's music ever recorded by anyone except Monk himself." - Billboard
