Description
Based on an idea by outstanding guitarist Marc Sinan and author/director Marc Schiffer who has written the text, Fasil tells of the life of Aisha, the great love and youngest wife of the prophet Mohammed, in the course of a brilliant song cycle.
The improvisations take as their inspirational starting point fragments of recitations from the Koran recorded by Marc Sinan in Turkey. Together with Julia Hülsmann's songs they form an Ottoman suite, a Fasil. Highlights in this transcultural project include exceptional performances by Sinan himself, and by Yelena Kuljiæ in the role of Aisha. The singer was recently described by the Frankfurter Rundschau as "the most thrilling new voice in the current jazz scene."
Marc Sinan, son of a Turkish Armenian mother and a German father, born in 1976, has been performing on international concert stages for over 15 years. Alongside solo concerts and chamber music projects with partners including Eliot Fisk, Jörg Widmann, the Turkish percussionist Burhan Öcal and the Rodin Quartet, Sinan has appeared as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and others. He has toured throughout Europe, North and South America, and recorded several CDs. Singer Yelena KuljÃc was born in Serbia in 1976 and performed with numerous pop, rock and jazz ensembles in her homeland. Since 2003 she has been based in Berlin, where she has featured in music theatre productions, attracting major reviews in the German press. Besides these two and violist Lena Thies, all three members of the popular Hülsmann trio - pianist Julia Hülsmann, bassist Marc Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich Köbberling - are present.
Personnel: Marc Sinan (guitar), Yelena Kuljiæ (vocals), Julia Hülsmann (piano), Lena Thies (viola), Marc Muellbauer (double-bass), Heinrich Köbberling (drums, percussion)
