Max Reger: Romantic Suites

The great Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt conducts the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra in a pair of suites by Max Reger (1873-1916), both scored for large forces: the Romantic Suite of 1912 and the Four Tone Poems after Arnold Böcklin, dating from the following year. Composers of the late Romantic era tended to model their instrumental works on programmatical ideas. Thus Reger's Romantic Suite seeks its effect in a musical impression rendered poetically and as such does not lend itself to theoretical analysis. Its romantic evocation derives from the Eichendorff verses with which Reger prefaced each individual movement. The same applies to the Böcklin-Suite, in which the atmosphere created by each of four of the artist's best-known paintings is recreated musically through tone colour and instrumentation. Personnel: North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt (conductor)
