  • Description

Debut recording of percussionist Marilyn Mazur's acclaimed international band, the adventurous, song-oriented 'Celestial Circle' which has been active since 2008. Repertoire intersperses songs and instrumentals penned by Mazur with collectively improvised trios and duos. Swedish singer Josefine Cronholm has her ECM debut here and old friends John Taylor and Anders Jormin make welcome returns.

Marilyn Mazur's work has always expressed a free-spiritedness beyond idioms and borders. Born in New York, raised in Denmark, she has contributed powerfully to improvisation on both sides of the Atlantic, and her resume has included stints with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Gil Evans as well as 14 years on the road with the Jan Garbarek Group. In recent years her own groups have been the primary focus and her Celestial Circle band, which premiered at the Molde Festival, is already an established force on the concert and festival circuit.

Mazur recently won the first EuroCore - JTI Jazz Award, given to "a prominent musical personality with international reach, an international profile and an international standard of musicianship". She previously won the JazzPar Prize. Her last album Elixir, released in 2008, was amongst ECM's best-selling discs of that year.

The presence of UK pianist John Taylor is an important plus-point for ECM listeners - Taylor sessions for the label have been infrequent in the 21st century (his last leader date was 2002's Rosslyn). A Taylor tune, "Your Eyes", opens Celestial Circle: with Josefine Cronholm singing, it evokes associations with the Taylor/Norma Winstone collaboration in the Azimuth group. Cronholm first attracted attention in the 1990s as a member of Django Bates's groups. She has collaborated with Mazur since 1997 in diverse ensembles and has her own parallel recording career. Bassist Anders Jormin records as a leader for ECM and is on recordings by Charles Lloyd, Don Cherry, Bobo Stenson, Tomasz Stanko, Mark Feldman, Jon Balke and Sinikka Langeland.

Personnel: Josefine Cronholm (voice), John Taylor (piano), Anders Jormin (double-bass), Marilyn Mazur (percussion, drums, voice)
