  • Description

This is an album of Bach's Goldberg Variations, performed by one of Europe's leading contemporary jazz pianists, John Law.

Law started classical piano aged four and first performed in public at six. After winning an Open Scholarship Law studied piano and composition at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he won prizes for piano playing, including winning an Austrian government scholarship to study in Vienna with the renowned pianists Paul Badura-Skoda and Alfred Brendel. He turned to jazz in 1986, and has released many albums including the highly acclaimed 'Art of Sound' series for 33 Jazz.

This album finds him returning to his love of Bach. In his own interpretation of the Goldberg Variations, Law has bookended a traditional reading with two of his own electronic, ambient compositions based on the harmony and bass line used in Bach's work. "The result is a fascinating portal into Bach's music that sets the mood for a total experience of the work", says Jakob Baekgaard of All About Jazz.

Personnel: John Law (piano, electronics - 1, 34)
