  • Description

CD edition of Bill Evans 'Portrait in Jazz' + 7 bonus tracks with 28-page booklet featuring new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide to Jazz's Brian Morton and Paris' prestigious publication, Jazz Magazine.

"Evans' great innovation was to make the bass player and drummer, in this case, the sublime Paul Motian, equal partners in the music. LaFaro's bass constantly offers countermelodies to the piano lines. Though there are ballad performances as well, this is Evans at his most upbeat, almost joyous. If it lacks the sheer immersiveness of the Village Vanguard date, it is also, much more open, and accessible." - Brian Morton, Penguin Guide to Jazz

    Description

Limited edition classic LP, reissued on 180g vinyl, audiophile pressing.

Portrait in Jazz was Bill Evans' third album as a leader, following New Jazz Conceptions (1956) and Everybody Digs Bill Evans (1958). It was also Evans' first studio album with his legendary trio, featuring Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian.

The repertoire here consists of standards (all of them treated in Evans' very personal style) plus two originals, "Peri's Scope" – premiered on Portrait in Jazz, and "Blue in Green," which was co-composed by Miles Davis. Bill first recorded the latter composition in March 1959 with Miles for the classic album, Kind of Blue.

    Description

Bill Evans Trio's iconic LP 'Portrait in Jazz' originally released on Riverside in 1960, now pressed on 180g blue vinyl.

Includes new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide To Jazz's writer Brian Morton and Paris' prestigious Jazz Magazine.

"If there's any doubt that Evans is one of the freshest things to happen to the piano in the last few years, this album should dispel any such feelings. The trio is a closely integrated unit. The interplay among the three men is best illustrated in 'Leaves', wherein they carry on a three-way conversation, with bassist Scott LaFaro leading the discussion. Here is an album with meaning - here is truth." - ***** Don DeMicheal, DownBeat
