  • Description

This Elemental Music reissue presents Tyrone Davis classic album 'I Just Can t Keep On Going', originally released by the Columbia label in 1980. His penultimate record for Columbia, it shifts in mood from fast numbers to the elegant ballads that are his trademark.

Davis is considered the 'king of romantic Chicago soul', for he moved to that city in 1959 and worked there as a valet for bluesman Freddie King. Eventually, Davis began singing in clubs on the city s West and South Sides, and by 1965 he had been signed by the Four Brothers label. Three years later, he moved to producer Carl Davis Dakar Records and earned his first hit, 'Can I Change My Mind'. The song went to Number One on the R&B charts, and hit the pop Top Five. In the Seventies, he scored other R&B chart-toppers with 'Turn Back the Hands of Time' and 'Turning Point', before switching to Columbia Records, where his classic Soul sound was oriented more to Disco music and Philly sound. Tyrone s sleek vocal style burned up the charts with his sensational version of the standard 'How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)', featured here, as well as with his smooth bedroom ballads 'I Just Keep on Going' and 'Overdue'. Without a doubt Tyrone Davis is one of the most imitated soul singers of the modern era.
