Mendelssohn & Schumann: Violin Concertos

Description

For her sixth ECM recording, violinist Carolin Widmann brings together the last major orchestral works of the two German composers: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Violin Concerto op 64, celebrated from the outset as a masterpiece, and Robert Schumann's Violin Concerto WoO 23, which had to wait for so many years to find due recognition as one of the greatest compositions of the Romantic era. Widmann leads the widely-acclaimed Chamber Orchestra of Europe in these inspired performances, recorded at Baden Baden's Festspielhaus. Her earlier ECM recording, in 2007, of the Schumann Violin Sonatas received the highest international praise, including a Gramophone Award nomination and each of her releases since then with music from Schubert to Morton Feldman, Xenakis and Tüür has emphasized her resourcefulness. In 2013 she was named Artist of the Year at the International Classical Music Awards. Carolin Widmann will perform Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Alexander Shelley at three UK venues this autumn Waterside Theatre, Aylesbury (27 October), Corn Exchange, Cambridge (28 October) and Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury (30 October) and also with the Oxford University Orchestra under Daniel Harding at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford on 6 November. In addition, she plays the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in D minor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and her composer/clarinettist brother Jörg Widmann, who is also their principal guest conductor, at three concerts in Ireland: Dublin (9 November), Limerick (10 November) and Cork (11 November). Personnel: Carolin Widmann (violin/director), Chamber Orchestra of Europe
