Lumi
Description
Recipient of a rare 5-Star review from the Penguin Guide to Jazz, Lumi is one of the key items in the discography of Finnish drummer-composer Edward Vesala.
It was the first of his ECM recordings to feature his Sound and Fury ensemble, with creative co-arranger Iro Haarla on piano and harp. "Each piece is full of melodic ideas, brilliantly scored", wrote The Wire. A range of moods is explored, from the impressionist tone poem "The Wind" to the playful Finnish tango "Fingo," and guitarist Raoul Björkenheim solos powerfully.
Personnel: Esko Heikkinen (trumpet, piccolo trumpet); Pentti Lahti (alto and baritone saxophones, flutes); Jorma Tapio (alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute); Tapani Rinne (tenor and soprano saxophone, clarinets); Keiri Heinilä (tenor and soprano saxophones, flute) Tom Bildo (trombone, tuba); Iro Haarla (piano, harp); Raoul Björkenheim (guitar); Taito Vainio (accordion); Hakä (bass); Edward Vesala (drums, percussion)
