Helen Ganya Brown returns with her own project Dog In The Snow and her debut LP Consume Me (out October 20 on BATTLE WORLDWIDE).
Written whilst on tour last year in the US with Fear Of Men, Consume Me deals with fragmented explorations of the self and the world consuming her. A cohesive and minimalistic piece, the ten tracks which were written in succession, create something cyclical as opposed to linear. Lyrical ideas come through and are repeated, song-titles show up as words in other songs. Beds of warm synths intermingle with gritty guitar and, at times, jagged programmed drum beats. The result is an all-consuming world of mixed identities.
Dog In The Snow finds inspiration in the juxtapositions: the warm project title goes hand-in- hand with the grim ending of Kafka's 'The Trial'. Inspired by the dark underbelly of Scott Walker, the mortal anxieties of Sufjan Stevens, the glistening soundscapes of Susumu Yokota, Helen also finds influence from her own experience of being mixed race and a foreigner to her homelands, whilst exploring self-identity in its culture and ideas.
