  • Description

Take a group of the hottest contemporary fiddle players from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, mix with some wonderfully sympathetic piano and guitar arrangements and you've got the award winning Blazin' Fiddles on your hands. Though firmly rooted in the traditional folk and acoustic music of Scotland, they have taken that sound into many surprising, often unlikely, settings. In the seventeen years since the bands inception, they have performed everywhere from village halls to the Royal Albert Hall, from Billy Connolly's house to Buckingham Palace, in their own music schools – Blazin' In Beauty in Scotland and Blazin' In Boston (in the USA), to involvement in projects with the likes of Del Amitri's Justin Currie, Eddi Reader and Mull Historical Society's Colin MacIntyre in the successful With Strings Attached project (which was revitalised ten years on with singers Adam Holmes, Rachel Sermanni and American Aoife O'Donovan to rave reviews). They also played the Hogmanay show this year on BBC 1 TV. Formed in 1998 by Inverness native Bruce MacGregor, Blazin' Fiddles is a traditional Celtic fiddle group based in the Highlands and islands of Scotland. MacGregor's original intention was to put together a one-off group for the 1998 Highland Festival, in order to showcase the various different fiddle styles of the Highlands area through a sort of regional supergroup of players. Based on the success of that event, the band stayed together, eventually going on to record its first album, Fire On!, in 2002. Generally consisting of a lineup of four fiddles with piano and guitar accompaniment, the one mainstay of the group's long career has been MacGregor, who has continued to shuffle the lineup and recruit many talented players. Since their 2002 debut, Blazin' Fiddles has gone on to release six more albums, culminating with the upcoming North. The tunes on North range from classic airs by such 18th century composers as William Marshall through to modern compositions by the great Chicago fiddler Liz Carroll. All of that creativity, musical skill, hedonism and energy has been put into the new album North, which is the first full album with the band's new line up by fiddlers Jenna Reid, Bruce MacGregor, Rua Macmillan and Kristan Harvey are joined by Anna Massie on guitar/fiddle and Angus Lyon on piano to deliver intoxicating music for all.
