  • Description

The American musician Nate Najar is rapidly emerging as one of the top international acoustic jazz guitarists featuring the nylon string ,finger style classical guitar technique and gathering new audiences worldwide. This brilliant album was recorded in New York City at Nola Studio-the same as most of the legendary recordings made for Candid by Nat Hentoff at the beginning of the sixties' decade. This, his second CANDID recording is Brazilian in concept and represent a wide cross section of Brazilian musical influence - a sort of Watercolor of Brazil in fact. Four of the selections come from one of Bossa Nova's originators Antonio Carlos Jobim, and yet all four are very much post Bossa Nova. The rest of the selections either predate Bossa or are jazz tunes with a Brazilian influence. Jobim's Ligia is from Jo?o Gilberto and Fotografia from the wonderful record Elis and Tom featuring Elis Regina. Amparo and Chovendo Na Roseira came from an ultimately forgettable film called 'The Adventurers' for which Jobim composed the score. Canto De Ossanha originally entered the musical lexicon via guitarist Baden Powell all those years ago, and during the Bossa Nova craze an English lyric was put to it renaming the song Let Go. Aquarela Do Brasil is that gorgeous, soaring 1939 melody from Ary Barroso known throughout much of the world simply as Brazil! Walt Disney introduced it to the wider population in 1942 and it has endured. Prominent here are Chuck Redd and bassist Tommy Cecil - two of the finest musicians around today. Chuck is equally strong on both drums and vibes and often Chuck switches to vibes - creating a drummer-less trio, which offers a nice contrast in texture to the standard guitar trio. On some tracks here, good friend Duduka da Fonseca adds his unique rhythmical and musical approach to the drums while Chuck plays vibes. Harry Allen, featured on Ligia and Samba for Felix is one of the most lyrical, inventive and sensitive tenor players and is admirably suited to the Brazilian lexicon. This captivating set shows Nate Najar to be a passionate player with a highly developed use of harmonics and easy swinging style which establishes an immediate emotional link with audiences wherever he appears.
