Description
TWO ORIGINAL COLLECTABLE BYG ACTUEL ALBUMS
NEWLY REMASTERED IN DELUXE 2-CD SET
By the late 1960's Archie Shepp, following his earlier patronage by the legendary John Coltrane, had established himself as a leading player in the field of avant-garde jazz. Although an enthusiastic advocate of musical experimentation, his music still retained a strong sense of tradition, his playing style being deeply tinged with a feeling for the blues and soul music. In 1969 he travelled to Algiers to perform at the Pan-African Music Festival and following this, travelled onto Paris where he recorded a series of albums for the BYG Actuel label.
This deluxe 2-CD set captures Shepp's complete live performance at the Juan les Pins Jazz Festival in Antibes on July 18, 1970. Originally released on the BYG Actuel label as two separate albums, each disc features one extended piece, split into 2 parts.
The digibook package includes a photo-laden booklet with new, in-depth notes.
A champion of the free jazz movement, BYG Actuel was formed in Paris in 1967 by Jean Georgakarakos, Jean-Luc Young and Fernand Boruso, taking its name from the initials of the founders? surnames.
In the summer of 1969, the label invited leading musicians of the American free jazz movement to Paris to record at a time when they were receiving scant attention in the US. Jazz photographer Jacques Bisceglia was instrumental in bringing the artists and label together, and the albums which resulted document many important recordings.
