Description
One of the great jazz/dance band leaders to emerge in the 1940s, Herman (who played clarinet, alto and soprano sax and was also a spirited singer) spent almost his entire professional career on the road with a changing personnel of ever-talented musicians, intermittently known as the Herd. Once in a while an engagement of several weeks presented itself, and he would often return to the Hollywood Palladium, the venue of the two atmospheric broadcasts featured here: typical programmes that Woody's working band played every night for dance concerts all over the USA. Featured are arrangements by Ralph Burns, Shorty Rogers and George Shearing; highlights are solos by Phil Urso, Shorty, Urbie Green and Woody himself.
