  • Description

The original soundtrack recording of the movie Blueback, directed by Robert Connolly, will be released in cinemas around the world, starting with Germany on 29 December. The Australian cinema release is 1 Jan 2023. Based on the best-selling novel by Tim Winton, the feature film is a timely tale about the ocean, a beautiful marine creature, and a young girl's power to change the world. The music is by award-winning Australian composer Nigel Westlake, whose previous film scores have included Babe (1996 APRA Award for Best Film Score, 1997 Film Critics Circle of Australia Award for Best Original Music), Miss Potter (2007 International Film Music Critics Award for Best Original Score for a Comedy Film, 2007 APRA Awards for Feature Film Score of the Year and Best Soundtrack Album), Paper Planes, Ali's Wedding (2017 ARIA Award for Best Original Soundtrack Recording) and the iMax features SolarMax and The Edge (1998 APRA Award for Most Performed Classical Work). Nigel has just been announced as the recipient of the Distinguished Services to the Australian Screen Award at the 2022 Screen Music Awards. Outside the world of film, he is also a highly respected composer: his album 'Compassion', featuring Lior and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, was four weeks at #1 in the Core Classical charts and sold almost 6000 units, and he has twice been awarded the Paul Lowin Orchestra Prize for composition, among many other accolades. "Nigel Westlake is a national treasure," said the CEO of APRA/AMCOS, Dean Ormston. "His evocative scores and compositions fill screens and auditoriums, creating a third dimensional magic and richness, all in a uniquely Australian way - he is a master. Nigel's generosity of spirit is only matched by his humbleness. He is an enthusiastic collaborator, enormous supporter of the screen and broader composing community, and committed to philanthropy through the wonderful work of the Smugglers of Light Foundation."
