  • Description

Four sessions from the Swiss group Jazz Live Trio, each featuring a post-bebop master of the tenor saxophone as its guest: Americans Johnny Griffin and Hal Singer, Poland's Leszek Zadlo and Holland's Ferninand Poval.

Compiled from four separate radio sessions recorded between 1975 and 1980, the CD presents a programme of jazz standards, original compositions and improvised blues. Highlights include Johnny Griffin's rendition of "All The Things You Are", Hal Singer's "Lina", and Ferninand Poval's ten-minute rendition of "Body & Soul".

This is Volume 36 of TCB's Swiss Radio Days, a series dedicated to issuing rare and previously unreleased concerts performances recorded for Swiss Radio. Part of the series is dedicated to sessions recorded by the radio stations resident group, The Jazz Trio Live accompanying famous musicians who dropped into the station as guests.

Johnny Griffin, of course, needs no introduction to jazz fans, but it's worth noting a few short facts on the other three saxophonists: Hal Singer is a veteran of the 1940's who started his career playing in the bands of Jay McShann and Oran 'Hot Lips' Page and later became something of an R&B star with a No.1 hit on Savoy Records. Leszek Zadlo is one of Poland's most respected musicians and a mainstay of his country's jazz scene since the 1960's. He has worked with countless American and European musicians, including Dexter Gordon, Dusko Goykovich and Alan Skidmore. Ferdinand Poval is a veteran of the 60s European jazz scene and a featured soloists on countless recordings and concerts dates with such names as Philly Joe Jones, Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland and Maynard Ferguson.

Personnel: Klaus Koenig (piano), Peter Frei (bass), Peter Schmidlin, Alberto Canonico, Pierre Favre (drums) plus guests: Johnny Griffin, Hal Singer, Laszek Zadlo, Ferdinand Povel (tenor saxophone)
