LIMITED 180-GRAM VIRGIN VINYL EDITION - COMPLETE ALBUM + BONUS TRACK. Sketches of Spain was Miles Davis and Gil Evans' third conceptual album, the first being "Miles Ahead" in 1957, followed by their adaptation of George Gershwin's music for "Porgy and Bess"in 1958. On Sketches of Spain, Miles stated in his autobiography that the whole concept came out of listening to Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez".

Description

Released in 1960 "Sketches of Spain" incorporates elements of Spanish music, including flamenco and classical influences, into the jazz idiom. The album features lush orchestral arrangements, with Davis's trumpet playing front and center, creating a rich tapestry of sound. One of the standout tracks on the album is the adaptation of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez," a classical guitar concerto. Davis's interpretation of this piece is particularly notable for its emotional depth and haunting beauty. While Joaquin Rodrigo's compositions provided much of the inspiration for the album, it's essential to note the significant role of arranger and composer Gil Evans who Davis had previously collaborated with groundbreaking album "Miles Ahead."
Evans's arrangements on "Sketches of Spain" are masterful, blending the traditional Spanish elements with Davis's trumpet playing and the orchestral accompaniment. Presented here is the complete original Miles Davis-Gil Evans album Sketches of Spain (Columbia CS8271), an authentic milestone of jazz history. The LP marked the third collaboration between Davis and Evans (following Miles Ahead and Porgy and Bess). As a bonus to this masterpiece, we have included "Song of Our Country", a track that completes the sessions, as well as two tunes previously recorded by Miles that also share the Spanish feeling and which, in a sense, foreshadow the making of Sketches of Spain. Also added are two tracks from Miles & Gil Evans' 1961 Carnegie Hall concert: "Spring Is Here", which they didn't include on any of their studio albums, and the live version of "Concierto de Aranjuez".
