  • Description

Batagraf was formed in 2003 as a research pool for percussionists who were interested in flexible, elastic rhytmic traditions as opposed to the strict sequenzed computer rhythms that evolved during the 90 s and 00´s. The group has since then made numerous travels to Gambia and Senegal, as well as seminars and workshops with percussion masters throughout the world. Through the years the group has done a great number of concerts in varying lineups, and the core group has included Harald Skullerud, Ingar Zach and Kenneth Ekornes, but now consists of Helge Norbakken, Snorre Bjerck and Jon Balke. This core has formed different alliances with other artists, forming a family of groups with separate names.

Pratagraf is a collaboration with two of Norways leading standup comedians, Espen Beranek Holm and Are Kalvø. Batabrok is a collaboration with rapper Runar Gudnason and Hedvig Mollestad, and lastly the current group presented on the Delights of Decay album: Batagraf featuring vocal group No4 and instrumentalists Mathias Eick and Trygve Seim.

Batagraf has been researching the relation between rhythm and language , both in collaborations with traditional poets, but also in the concerts with sound poets like Jaap Blonk and Sidsel Endresen. Batagraf celebrates its 15 year anniversary and release of "Delight of Decay" (Jazzland) in 2018 with a three day festival (7-9 february) at the National Jazz scene in Oslo, presenting the three above mentioned versions of the group.
