Description
The John Abercrombie Quartet has become one of the most widely-admired groups in contemporary jazz. It is both a deeply swinging group and an adventurous one - as their fourth ECM album attests.
With a range that can encompass everything from standards to bebop to free play to chamber music or raga-esque excursions, the quartet extends the jazz tradition yet there is a consistent warmth and humanity to the sound, always evident in the harmonic and melodic material that Abercrombie writes for the group.
The quartet has been the primary focus of Abercrombie's work for a decade, and the associations with Mark Feldman and Joey Baron go back much further. 'Wait Till You See Her' follows 'Cat 'n' Mouse' (2000), 'Class Trip' (2003) and 'The Third Quartet' (2006), all highly praised by international critics. Recorded in New York last December, the disc features seven new Abercrombie compositions, plus the tender and romantic title track, a Rodgers and Hart tune originally penned for the 1942 musical, 'By Jupiter'.
Interplay between Abercrombie, Feldman and Baron is given a different inflection this time around by the input of a remarkable young bass player, Thomas Morgan, whose resume already includes work with Steve Coleman, Paul Motian, Masubumi Kikuchi, and whose agility and deep rooted musicality is exceptional.
Personnel: John Abercrombie (guitar), Mark Feldman (violin), Thomas Morgan (double-bass), Joey Baron (drums)
