Award-winning German pianist/composer Julia HÃ¼lsmann, described by Jazzwise as "a highly imaginative player possessing incredible rhythmic suppleness", makes her ECM debut with a charming programme of 'songs without words' - strongly melodic piano trio music. It features mostly HÃ¼lsmann's pieces though bassist Marc Muellbauer and drummer Heinrich KÃ¶bberling also contribute material, plus a cover of Seal's pop song "Kiss from a Rose".

Julia HÃ¼lsmann was born in 1968 in Bonn, and studied music at the Hochschule der KÃ¼nste in Berlin. A stipend took her to New York where there were further studies with Richie Beirach, Maria Schneider and Jane Ira Bloom. Her trio was founded in Berlin in 1997, and quickly progressed from playing standards to original material. All trio members write for the band but the primary focus is the pianist's compositions. Both as a player and writer HÃ¼lsmann conveys a sense of poetic compression, expressive gestures pared to a minimum. This less-is-more, bare-boned feel to the music has prompted critical comparisons with Carla Bley.

All three trio players cite music on ECM (especially Keith Jarrett and John Taylor) as formative for their development, but they've also been influenced by modern jazz trios from Bill Evans to Ahmad Jamal. There is no doubt however that HÃ¼lsmann is a musician who has found her own voice, and the combination of her clearly delineated melodies and the trio's subtle interaction will win many friends for the group. She says: "My music is all about melody. It's that simple".

Bassist Marc Muellbauer, born in London in 1968, also leads his own nine-piece band, Kaleidoscope. His musical experiences have been varied. He has played contemporary classical music with the ensemble United Berlin, and in workshops with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Maurizio Kagel. He also plays Argentinean tango in the quintet Yira Yira, and jazz with a number of other formations.

Drummer Heinrich KÃ¶bberling has worked with Aki Takase, Ernie Watts and many more: he has played on around 50 jazz albums. His 1997 leader date Pisces included Marc Johnson and Ben Monder as sidemen and is also a member of the post-techno/house group 8doogymoto.
