Description
Bruce Turner was one of the British Jazz scene’s great eccentrics and one of its world class players. He played with Freddy Randall’s Band on clarinet before controversially joining Humphrey Lyttelton on Alto Sax and Clarinet in 1953. The addition of a saxophone caused outrage amongst the fans and led to the famous ‘Go home dirty bopper’ banner being waved at Birmingham Town Hall. By the time he left in 1957 he was one of the Lyttelton band’s best-loved members. He left to form his own Jump band which was based on the small swing bands on the 1930s. The band struggled largely because it was so out of step with the burgeoning Trad Boom. Bruce was not the most business-like person in the world. This CD charts the progress of the band from its embryonic period (and a previously unissued album) through to its final line-up which featured Trumpeter and jazz writer John Chilton and current Humphrey Lyttelton band trombonist and arranger, Pete Strange. The band has a great cult following and this CD contains many previously unissued tracks as well as tracks were only released on obscure records. It joins our other Bruce Turner CDs LACD49 and LACD160. -
