Description
The historical discography of Der Freischutz is huge and long-standing. However, none of the great conductors of the past (Toscanini, Walter, Furtwangler, Karajan) have led a studio recording. This precious edition by Furtwangler was recorded during a performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1954, the last year of the director's life.
Under the direction of Furtwangler, this recording presents the Vienna Philharmonic, the Chorus of the Vienna State Opera, and soloists Afred Poell (baritone) and Elisabeth Grummer (soprano) amongst a high-octane line up of soloists.
The performance was recorded by Austrian radio technicians, and it can still be counted among those that present excellent sound quality, in many cases superior to contemporary studio productions. Needless to underline its historical importance. The only thing that can be said is that, despite the many years that have passed, it remains among the most impressive and profound recordings of Der Freischutz ever to be released.
Wilhelm Furtwangler (25 January 1886 – 30 November 1954) is regarded as one of the greatest symphonic and operatic conductors of the 20th century. He was a major influence for many later conductors, and his name is often mentioned when discussing their interpretative styles. Furtwangler was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic between 1922 and 1945, and from 1952 until 1954. He was also principal conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra (1922–26), and was a guest conductor of other major orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic.
