Description
Beethoven, at the height of his fame, took time out from writing his extraordinarily complex late works to set folk songs. These settings are the least familiar and most underappreciated group of works from the composer's output.
Beethoven wrote 179 folk song arrangements over a period of 11 years from 1809 to 1820. Most of the settings are of Scotish, Irish and Welsh folk songs, a surprising fact considering that Beethoven did not journey to the British Isles at any point in his life.
