Description

Comprised of four of London's most in demand musicians, Flashmob present their debut album, 'Generals' 'Generals' is the debut release from guitarist, Ryan Williams' Flashmob. Combining a mix of trio and quartet presentations, Flashmob move through ECM like forms, dark, probing Radiohead inspired through composition and onto hypnotic short form hooks. A blend of contemporary long forms, rhythmic dexterity and harmonic breadth. Comprised of four of the most in demand young musicians on the London scene, Flashmob are Rory Simmons (Jamie Cullum, Fringe Magnetic), Will Collier (Bobby McFerrin, The Will Collier Septet), Nick Smalley (Tina May, Gareth Lockrane) and Ryan Williams (Gerard Presencer, Seb Rochford) The album opener Chetniks skips and shifts through a mesmerising motif. Simmons and Williams breakdown to duo evoking shades of Dave Douglas/Brad Shepik before a rousing re-entry form the bass and drums. A Near Miss is a loose, minimalist 14 bar form reminiscent of Kenny Wheeler/John Abercrombie. The three timbres build through the solos whilst maintaining a sympathetic ensemble sound. Blind Faith asserts itself with a fragmented intervallic idea. The improvisations underpinned by Nick Smalley's rhythmic probing and Will Collier's propulsion. Elsewhere, O.A.C (Reprise) nods to the influence of David Binney. A development of O.A.C earlier on the record, the hypnotic, looping vamp provides a platform for Simmons' measured, yet unpredictable improvisation. The album closes with Top Shelf a stomping, unison hook followed by jagged and syncopated stop-time section. The agile and fluent guitar solo from Williams is a mixture of triadic lines and varied rhythmic ideas followed by a concise and engaging trumpet solo from Simmons. A statement of the theme is followed by a rousing drum solo.
