I Saw Three Ships - Christmas Carols from Guildford Cathedral

The music on this CD is designed to represent something of the wide range of works performed by the choir of Guildford Cathedral in the course of the Advent and Christmas season. As well as some well known items, it contains some pieces closely associated with the cathedral and its musicians over the last forty or so years. A second thread runs though the programme; most of the pieces are based on traditional folk tunes and carols, albeit often in unexpected guises. Guildford Cathedral ?the only new cathedral to be built in the South of England since the Reformation is also unique among Anglican cathedrals in having established an entirely new music foundation at the completion of the building. The cathedral choir sang for the first time at the service of Consecration in May 1961, and under the direction of the four Organists and Masters of the Choristers since that date it has established an impressive international reputation. This reputation for excellence has been founded on the tremendous commitment, energy and enthusiasm of parents, choristers and adult singers alike.
