Renowned organist David Hill performs pieces chosen from the huge list of repertoire presented in recitals over the last 50 years at St Lawrence Church, Alton.

The Henry Speechly organ at St Lawrence Church offers a traditional but unique sound. Arguably, it is regarded as the finest parish church organ in the South of England. Built in 1866, some have declared that playing it resembles reconnecting with an old and trusted friend.

This organ has only been recorded once before by the late Cyril Diplock, at the time organist back in 1976/77. During its 55th season, the Alton Organ Society decided to commission the worldclass choral director & organist, Dr David Hill MBE (one of our Patrons) to make this recording with 'Herald AV'. Featured are a number of organ works that have been played over the years demonstrating the versatility of the Henry Speechly organ.

It is said that 'hearing is believing' therefore we are fortunate to have this opportunity to showcase the organ's tonal characteristics, as these were what made this organ such a wonderful instrument - popular with so many distinguished national and international visiting organists

David Hill is widely respected as both a choral and orchestral conductor. His talent has been recognised by his appointments as Musical Director of The Bach Choir, Music Director of Leeds Philharmonic Society, Associate Guest conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor of Yale Schola Cantorum. He was Chief Conductor of the BBC Singers from September 2007 to September 2017 and is a former Music Director of Southern Sinfonia. In March 2018, he was honoured with the prestigious Royal College of Organists medal, in recognition of distinguished achievement in choral conducting and organ playing. From July 1st 2022 he is assuming the Presidency of The Royal College of Organists for 2 years

"The organ has a tonal homogeneity which adds a smooth richness and class to everything plated it, even the acerbic snarl generated by Langlais's Te Deum.[] David Hill offers a masterclass in articulation" Choir & Organ (5 STARS)
