Australian roots rock trio The Beautiful Girls give fans of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper another reason to be cheerful. The group, fronted by singer/guitarist Mat McHugh, has come up with another engaging set of songs that feel really familiar and are set in motion by a loose limbed, breezy vibe. But the laid back ambience is deceptive and they reveal emotional and artistic depths that seem rare for such a young band. At times the group draws on Sublime's stumbling surf bum vibe and the songs motor along with an optimistic reggae thump, which belies the care worn lyrical content that rake over loss, dissapointment, lies and loves.
