Wild Life
Description
One of these nights featured a set including New York saxophonist Chris Cheek and London based drummer James Maddren with bassist Oli Hayhust sitting-in. The energy and chemistry between the four musicians was so natural it led to a European tour and recording in 2015.
Chris is a veteran of the New York jazz scene. He has played with some of the most inspirational musicians of the last century, including Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow and Bill Frisell. Oli Hayhurst and James Maddren have both established themselves as stalwarts on the UK jazz scene and have worked with a "who's-who" of artists, including Pharoah Sanders, Julian Arguelles and Seamus Blake.
The compositions on Wild Life are Riepler's direct response to his surroundings living in East London, feeding off the rich multi-cultural, bustling energy that is present on the everyday streets of Dalston. Hannes is a composer that is interested in form. Deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, with an open ear to many other genres the compositions enable the group to freely expand on his musical ideas. The album also features one track by Chris Cheek and the final track is a cover by American singer-songwriter Beck.
Personnel: Hannes Riepler (guitar), Chris Cheek (saxophone), Oli Hayhurst (double bass), James Maddren (drums)
