Description
This anthology celebrates the recorded legacy of clarinetist Jimmie Noone, from his earliest recordings until his final studio session. The timespan encompasses the evolution of the music itself. Noone proved equal to these challenges. Yet throughout, he remained true to his own musical values, which were formed during his boyhood in New Orleans before he worked his way upriver to Chicago.
Noone's most important and influential period began in autumn 1926 when he took up residence at the Apex Club in Chicago with his own group that eventually included pianist Earl Hines. He drew increasingly on Tin Pan Alley material and his versions of popular songs helped introduce them into the standard jazz repertory. Furthermore, Noone anticipated the rise of clarinet playing leaders like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw by almost a decade. He succumbed to a heart attack on l9th April 1944, just four days short of his 49th birthday.
These historic recordings are accompanied by an authoritaive essay by noted jazz journalist Sally-Ann Worsfold.
