Description

Part of the on-going and highly commended series based on the Record Supervision catalogue of the 1960s. This unusual grouping brings together four of the leading lights of British Traditional and Mainstream Jazz. Acker Bilk was on the verge of the big breakthrough: he hadn't had his hit with "Stranger On The Shore" but was leading the most popular band of the Trad Boom. Terry Lightfoot was hot on his heels in the popularity stakes. Both would have singles in the charts over the following few years. Archie Semple was a highly distinctive and original player. He was part of the Alex Welsh Band and would never achieve the popularity of the other two, but became one of the UK's most respected players. Sandy Brown was, quite simply, one of the most original jazz musicians the UK has ever produced. The original LP was a clever marketing ploy by the producer, Denis Preston, to cash in on the Trad Boom's enthusiasm for the clarinet. He unwittingly, or otherwise, produced a very satisfying collection which has been much sought after in the intervening years.
