Samuel Barber: Piano Music

Samuel Barber's piano music is rarely heard, for one reason simply because of its enormous challenges in matters of technique. The young Korean pianist Yeseul Moon has not let herself be deterred and on her MDG debut is presenting a breathtaking new recording in MDG's surround sound SACD. The Sunday Times says of this recording: "Korean pianist Yeseul Moon gives a scintillating performance, muscular and cogent. She's equally impressive in the all-American Op 20 Excursions, the thoughtfully impassioned Op 46 Ballade and the lovely Chopinesque resonances of the Op 33 Nocturne. " BBC Music Magazine: "Heard in its original four-hand version, the Souvenirs are dispatched with tremendous sparkle, with Yeseul and her piano teacher Hardy Rittner clearly simpatico, thinking and feeling as one. The final delight of this album is the recording's clarity and friendly bounce, the ideal ambience for a pianist and repertoire that together combine immediate pleasure with music-making of genuine substance." The focus is formed by Barber's Sonata op.26, his only contribution to twelve-tone music and which the legendary Vladimir Horowitz premiered not without first asking the composer for a few extra difficulties. The breakneck finale consists of a four-part fugue not the sort of thing for weak nerves!
