Led by Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick, who between them have played with almost every important folk and folk rock group of the last 30 years, Brass Monkey was conceived as a one off recording project with a few live gigs to promote it, but everyone was so enthralled by it that it took off and achieved a life of its own. Five albums into the project, there have been a sizeable number of requests to produce the definitive Brass Monkey collection and here it is, 14 tracks of great music including their most requested song, "The Maid And The Palmer".

The group's instrumentation and approach to folk music is unique. Their deep English sound using brass and percussion in arrangements with acoustic folk instruments is instantly recognisable giving it an identity all its own. "The Definitive Collection" is drawn from their five Topic albums and contains over an hour of prime Brass Monkey with their unique combination of vocals, guitar, concertina, trumpet, trombone, percussion, saxophone, mouth organ, etc.
