Jazz pianist/composer David Berkman has assembled a group of 'Old and New Friends' who make up the exceptional sextet that he assembled for this recording. Saxophonist Dayna Stephens and bassist Linda are from his recently-formed quartet and the old friends are three renowned musicians: drummer Brian Blade and saxophonists Adam Kolker and Billy Drewes.

This, his fifth album for Palmetto Record, was produced by label founder Matt Balitsaris at Maggie's Farm, his recording studio built in a beautiful 18th century stone barn in bucolic Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It is Berkman's first new studio album of his original music since 2004, and it's a captivating showcase for his eloquent, sophisticated compositions, which deftly weave together six strong but disparate voices into an organic and exhilarating unity.

Berkman himself has been an integral part of the jazz community since moving to New York in 1985. He's played in countless bands including those of Cecil McBee, Tom Harrell and the Vanguard Orchestra, and co-leads the New York Standards Quartet.

Personnel: David Berkman (piano), Dayna Stephens (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone), Billy Drewes (alto saxophone, soprano saxophone), Adam Kolker (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet), Linda Oh (bass), Brian Blade (drums)

Press Quotes

(4.5 stars) Berkman takes full advantage of the three-horn front line throughout this journey. And why wouldn't he with players like this?...With music that resonates so deeply and sound that's superb, Old Friends And New Friends has it all.

All About Jazz, (Dan Bilawsky), April 26, 2015

(4 stars) A superbly balanced sextet, recorded in pristine beauty...Three very under-rated saxophonists and sure-footed bassist Linda Oh all deliver on the promise of the leader's tunes, but it's Blade on drums, whose undulating grooves and sense of drama really set Berkman's combustible tunes ablaze.

The Irish Times, (Cormac Larkin), May 8, 2015
