The Ukrainians' eponymous first album gained such good reviews that the band was booked to play festivals right across Europe. Recorded in 1991, the year Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union, it established the group as the only major exponent of a hybrid of traditional Ukrainian folk and Western rock music.

Five of these tracks included the Wedding Present line-up plus guest lead vocailist and fiddle player the 'legendary' Len Liggins, and the other five were recorded by Peter, Len and Roman on their own without the rest of the Wedding Present.

The opening track 'Oi Divchino' became the title track of The Ukrainians' first single (a 4-song 12" vinyl EP) and the NME made it their Single of the Week. Three weeks later, in October 1991, when the Ukrainians began their first UK tour, the NME said of the band's live performance: "this is POP and it blows your trousers off!".
