This 2 DVD set includes two classic films by the acclaimed film director Tony Palmer: 'William Walton - At the Haunted End of the Day' and 'Holst - In the Bleak Midwinter'.

The award-winning 1981 film 'At the Haunted End of the Day' is a revealing and moving portrait of the great composer, William Walton. Supported by archive material, extracts from many of his works, and interviews with Lady Susana Walton, Laurence Olivier and Sacheverell Sitwell, Walton reflects on his own journey from Oldham in Lancashire to his island home on Ischia in Italy, where he died in 1983.

In the Bleak Midwinter tells the extraordinary story of the life of Gustav Holst whose music, especially The Planets, owed little or nothing to anyone, least of all the 'English folk song tradition', but who was a very great composer who died of cancer, broken and disillusioned, before he was 60. It includes previously unseen material with his daughter Imogen, his pupils Michael Tippett, Herbert Howells, Edmund Rubbra and the 102 year-old Elliott Carter, as well as a pupils from St Paul's Girls School in Hammersmith who remember him from the time he was the school's Director of Music.
