Description

This specially priced 6 DVD box set consists of three films by the award-winning director Tony Palmer, the 3-disc 'Wagner' (TPDVD157), 'The Wagner Family' (TPDVD172), 'Parsifal' (TPDVD167) alongside 'The Life and Works of Richard Wagner', (TPDVD171) directed by Carl Fröhlich, which was the first ever 'bio-pic'.

Wagner (starring Richard Burton): This three DVD set of Palmer's Wagner has been described as "one of the most beautiful motion pictures in history". It stars Richard Burton, in his last major role, and the stellar cast includes including Laurence Oliver, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave, Gemma Craven, Gabriel Byrne, Ronald Pickup, Corin Redgrave, Cyril Cusack, Prunella Scales, Andrew Cruickshank, and many others. The music is performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Georg Solti with singers including Dame Gwyneth Jones and Peter Hofmann.

The Wagner Family: Palmer tells the controversial story of the Wagner family which has ruled the theatre in Bayreuth in southern Germany for the last 140 years. There's no doubt that Richard Wagner who built it was the most influential composer in the whole of the 19th century. This film explains how his family has survived a mixture of lies, deception, fraud and dangerous political alliances.

Parsifal - The Search for the Grail: Tony Palmer's documentary about Richard Wagner's Parsifal includes extracts from his stage production of the opera starring Placido Domingo, Violeta Urmana, Matti Salminen and Anna Netrebko with Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra and Choir.

Silent Wagner: The Life and Works of Richard Wagner, directed by Carl Fröhlich, was first released in 1913. The first ever 'bio-pic' and over 80 minutes long, it was restored from the original print, keeping the authentic tints to ensure it is as close to what Carl Fröhlich would have wanted you to see. The DVD includes commentary from the acclaimed director Tony Palmer.
