Description
Performed by Australian tenor Andrew Goodwin and Serbian born pianist Mira Yevtich, this unique coupling of song and song cycles by Beethoven, Schumann and Britten spans three centuries of song composition between the 18th and 20th centuries.
Adelaide, Op.46 is a song for solo voice and piano, which Beethoven composed around a Romantic poem by Friedrich von Matthisson. An early composition, Beethoven was only in his mid-twenties and had only just completed his studies with Joseph Haydn.
Dichteliebe (A Poet's Love) is the best-known song cycle of Robert Schumann. The texts for the 16 songs come from the Lyrisches Intermezzo of Heinrich Heine, written between 1822 and 1823 and published as part of the poet's Das Buch der Lieder.
Who Are These Children? is a song cycle for tenor and piano composed by Benjamin Britten. Consisting of settings of 12 poems by the Scottish poet William Soutar, it was composed to mark the 700th 'National Galleries of Scotland' Concert. The first performance was in Edinburgh in 1971 and featured tenor Peter Pears with the composer.
