He has played with Paul Simon, Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim, Patti Austin, the Crusaders, Harry Belafonte, Dizzy Gillespie and numerous other stars. In addition, he has released more than 30 albums under his own name since 1962. Jabulani â€“ which translates as: to be happy, or to bring joy and happiness â€“ is a collection of traditional South African wedding songs. To capture the feeling of a village celebration, the songs are accompanied by up to ten background singers. Unbridled joy and abandonment shape the album's vibe. And in fact, these wedding songs traditionally cover a whole spectrum of emotional states: joy, fear, doubt and excitement, and are an endless source of advice. The songs are catchy, richly structured and soulful. Jabulani is a real treat to listen to, with less emphasis than usual on the trumpet for Masekela and more on vocals.
