    From the moment she debuted on record with Big Brother And The Holding Company, in 1966, it was clear that no band - or studio - could contain the gale-force power of Janis Joplin. Going solo in 1969, the Texas-born icon of the hippie counterculture blazed a trail for all female singers to follow - though she would ultimately burn too hard, too bright, dying three months before the release of her second solo album, Pearl.

    The TV performances captured here - originally broadcast amid the white-hot heat of Joplin's brief solo era - prove what a talent the world lost in October 1970. Alongside definitive renderings of the signature Joplin songs Piece Of My Heart, Move Over and Get It While You Can are discussions with TV and radio hosts, including Joplin's last-known US TV interview, recorded just two months before her death.
