The term 'curiosity', which serves as a title for this CD, should be seen from three sides, or rather from three perspectives: the curiosity of the musicians who discover new pieces; that of the listeners who (hopefully) embark on this journey of discovery; and that of the composers Emilie Maria von Bach, Henriëtte Bosmans and Rita Strohl. Without a certain inquisitiveness and a desire to acquire knowledge, they might not have forged ahead with their compositions and given them the form in which we can hear them today.
KATI RAITINEN (cello) and BENGT FORSBERG (piano) describe their approach to the three works on this disc as a 'journey of discovery'.
To quote them directly: 'On this musical journey the dominant feeling was pleasure, together with a degree of astonishment that these compositions are not better known. As far as we know, this is the first ever recording of Maria Bach's Cello Sonata, and the sonatas by Rita Strohl and Henriëtte Bosmans are not especially well known, even in cello circles.
Bengt and I were unexpectedly presented with an oasis of time by the coronavirus pandemic. We spent long stretches of autumn 2020 locked in Allhelgonakyrkan (All Saints' Church) in Stockholm; we forgot time and space, and let ourselves be carried away by these diverse works.
We were amazed at the craftsmanship of the composers, and our gratitude towards them knows no bounds!'
