This new recording is part of 'The Blue Series'; unique music portraits of the most interesting personalities of the International Chopin Piano Competition.
An excellent reputation in Warsaw already preceded Leonora Armellini when she arrived at the 18th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in October 2021. She had been a familiar face in the city ever since the 2010 edition of the Competition, when as one of the youngest performers there (aged only 18) she made a strong impression even without getting through to the Final stage. So much so, indeed, that she was invited to the play the E minor Concerto at the 'Chopin and his Europe' Festival in summer 2011—a work she performed again here as a finalist in the Competition of 2021.
Armellini's sensitivity to musical line throughout makes this a satisfying performance: indeed, in the hall in October 2021 it felt like being at a good concert, which is surely where all competitors should be aiming.
Winner of fifth prize in the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 2021, Leonora Armellini was the first Italian woman to win a prize in the competition. During the 2010 Chopin Competition, she won the Janina Nawrocka Prize for 'exceptional musicality and beautiful sound'.
She performs both as a soloist and chamber musician, working with numerous orchestras (incl. the orchestra of La Fenice in Venice, Warsaw Philharmonic, Sinfonia Varsovia and the Ukrainian National Orchestra) and appearing at such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Warsaw Philharmonic and La Fenice in Venice.
In 2009 she was the youngest ever graduate of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where she studied with Sergio Perticaroli, and received a diploma with honours. She also honed her skills with Lilia Zilberstein in Hamburg and Boris Petrushansky in Imola. She has won first prize in the Premio Venezia (2005) and Camillo Togni (Brescia, 2009) competitions.
Her discography includes discs with works by Chopin, Schumann, Poulenc and Brahms (the complete works for two pianos), and her concerts have been broadcast on Italian and foreign television and radio. In 2012 the Fryderyk Chopin Institute released, in its 'Blue Series', a disc of recordings of her performances at the 16th Chopin Competition.
